Working with Master Craftsmen
The skill of Moroccan Bazaar is to find, cultivate and support the skilled craftsmen of Morocco by promoting and distributing their marvels to the furthest reaches of the world. The art of creating these typical items is an ancient one, age-old technique handed down from master craftsmen to the next generation.
And by knowing which areas produce the finest artefacts – certain closely guarded districts are producers of particular products with more artistry than others – and by working directly with the competent and accomplished craftsmen of each area, Moroccan Bazaar retains the best in traditional design and the high levels of quality demanded by the contemporary market.
Because we are personally involved with the craftsmen and women who create the products we sell, Moroccan Bazaar is deeply committed to their welfare and prosperity.
For the last 30 years we have been practising a fair trade policy and have pioneered a scheme whereby the craft workers receive 50% of their fee upfront for the work they are contracted to do which enables them to plan their work and provide for their families.
This method of fair trading creates trust and motivates our craft workers to continue producing beautiful and quality items. We are concerned too, for the future. We want to ensure that the traditional skills and techniques that create these items remain part of Morocco’s living heritage, and are not lost with the onward march of progress.
So, through an imaginative and far-sighted scheme, approved and partnered by the Moroccan government, we will be sponsoring young Moroccan school-leavers who might not otherwise find work to learn the ancient skills, to develop a love for artistic work and craftsmanship to continue the cultural history of Morocco and master a craft that will enable them to support themselves and prosper.
